Saint Richard was an English bishop who defended the rights of the Church against Henry III. He was also in favor of a seventh crusade. He was canonized in 1262.

A renowned jurist, he defended the Church's independence from royal power in England. He was persecuted by Henry III after being promoted bishop of Chichester. Richard is the patron saint of the coachmen.
